By Molly Walsh - I wrote a blog a year ago about Artificial Intelligence (AI). I compared a personally written essay to one AI wrote on the same topic—the essay aimed to demonstrate the change in vocabulary and how it could sound inauthentic. I highlighted the negative aspects of using AI for students and how challenging it is to get away with it for college applications (A.I. College Application Essay Experiment). However, I’d now like to write about the positives!
Artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, can be beneficial for students when used wisely. With so much pressure on high schoolers, especially seniors applying to college, it’s no wonder many are turning to AI for support. But while these tools can boost productivity and understanding, there’s a clear line between using AI as a resource and relying on it to do your academic or application work.
Let’s be clear: it is NOT appropriate to use AI to write your essays, papers, or college application materials for you. Submitting work that you didn’t write yourself—whether it’s for a class or your Common App—is dishonest and goes against the purpose of the assignment. Teachers and admissions officers want to hear your voice, your ideas, and your story. Relying on AI to do the thinking and writing can remove your unique perspective and even harm your chances of success or admittance.
That said, AI tools can still play a valuable role in your academic and college application journey. When used correctly, ChatGPT can act like a helpful study partner, editor, or idea generator. For example, here are a few appropriate and ethical ways students can use AI:
Brainstorming Ideas – Whether you’re trying to come up with a personal statement topic or seeking inspiration for a research paper, ChatGPT can help you explore possibilities. You still need to develop and write the content yourself, but AI can give you a starting point when you feel stuck.
Understanding Complex Topics – Confused by a reading in AP Lit? Need a plain-English explanation of photosynthesis? ChatGPT can break down complex topics and provide examples to help you better understand your class materials.
Time Management and Planning – ChatGPT can help you break large tasks into manageable steps or suggest strategies for studying and staying organized during school.
Using AI this way empowers you rather than replacing your effort. Think of it as a smart assistant, not a substitute for your work.
As colleges grow more aware of AI-generated writing, authenticity matters more than ever. Your voice, reflections, and growth are what make an application or essay powerful. AI can help you get there, but the final product should always be yours.
